Cathy Byrd
Curator
Cathy Byrd is Executive Director of Maryland Art Place, Baltimore. She directed the Georgia State University Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design Gallery, Atlanta, from 2001 to 2009. Her curatorial projects include Re\constructing Atlanta: a contemporary continuum, Potentially Harmful: the Art of American Censorship, Book Unbound, PG-13: Male Adolescent Identity in a Video Culture and Strange Planet. Byrd has brought to Atlanta the work of nationally and internationally known artists such as Carolee Schneemann, Lynda Benglis, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dread Scott, Eric Fischl, Karen Finley, Candice Breitz, Meschac Gaba, Rubén Ortíz-Torres, Eduardo Abaroa, Xing Danwen, Janet Biggs, Justine Kurland, Julie Moos and Nikki S. Lee, as well as Liliana Porter, Ilya Kabakov, Til Friedman and Jonathan Lasker. Byrd’s essays and reviews have appeared in Art in America, contemporary, Sculpture, Art Papers, Art & Antiques and Beaux Arts, among other publications.
Jillian Hernandez
Curator
Jillian Hernandez is a Ph.D. student in Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. Her research projects focus on contemporary art and girls’ studies. She was formerly Curatorial Associate at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami where she created the nationally acclaimed “Women on the Rise!” outreach program for teen girls. She has organized several exhibitions of contemporary art and published essays in her areas of interest. In March 2009 her curatorial project, “LANDMARKS: Works by Ali Prosch and the GisMo Collective” will open at the New Jersey City University—Lemmerman Gallery.
Susan Richmond
Curator
An assistant professor of Art History in the Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University, Susan Richmond received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. She has published articles on contemporary women artists in n.paradoxa: international feminist art journal and Camera Obscura: Feminism, Culture, and Media Studies, and in 2006 she contributed an essay to Potentially Harmful: The Art of American Censorship. She is currently working on a book project on Lynda Benglis, and is a regular contributor to the Atlanta-based magazine, Art Papers.
Curatorial Assistants
Patricia Lacrete | GSU assistant
Patricia Lacrete is a Haitian-American photographer based in Atlanta, GA. She is currently working toward a BFA in Photography at Georgia State University Welch School of Art and Design. Her previous work in film production has inspired her to pursue a career in fine art and documentary photography. In 2007, she was Production Assistant and Creative Assistant at Digital Soul Productions, an Atlanta-based film company. In addition to providing curatorial assistance, Lacrete will served as the web manager for www.losingyourself.com.
Emily Sollenberger | MAP assistant
Emily Sollenberger is a graduate student in the Savannah College of Art and Design Arts Administration MA program. Her Promoting the Arts seminar project, a Maryland Art Place Marketing Plan, led to an internship with MAP. After gaining experience with MAP and finishing her degree, she aspires to continue working within the nonprofit contemporary art field.
